MG4 Urban: more space, less money
The new MG4 Urban brings front-wheel drive, LFP batteries, up to 416km of range and a double-floor boot from €24,990 in Germany. We weigh it up on paper.

MG4 is no longer one car but a family. Alongside the familiar rear-drive hatchback, MG has launched the MG4 Urban (badged MG4 EV Urban in most of continental Europe) – slightly longer, taller, front-wheel drive and built on an all-new platform. Its mission is simple and ruthless: to deliver bigger-car space at a price that takes the fight to petrol-powered family hatchbacks. German pricing starts at €24,990, and in some markets the price dips below €20,000. That sounds like a low blow for rivals, so let’s see what sits behind the numbers.
Design and space: compact outside, roomy inside
The MG4 Urban is 4,395mm long, 1,842mm wide and 1,549mm tall, with a generous 2,750mm wheelbase. The proportions lean more crossover than classic hatchback, yet the drag coefficient is just 0.263. The battery is integrated directly into the body structure (Cell-to-Body), which saves weight and frees up cabin space.
The payoff shows in the practicality figures: around 480 litres of boot space plus a 98-litre hidden underfloor compartment, and up to 1,364 litres with the seats folded (per MG’s French press release; other markets quote slightly different figures). Rear legroom is 984mm, there are no fewer than 30 storage compartments, and a 5.2-metre turning circle should make city life easier.

Batteries, power and range
Both batteries use LFP chemistry – cheaper and happier being charged to 100% regularly. The 43kWh version gets a 110kW (149hp) motor and up to 325km of WLTP range. The larger 54kWh pack comes with 118kW (160hp) and up to 416km (405km on the top trim). Torque is 250Nm, 0–100km/h takes 9.6/9.5 seconds and top speed is limited to 160km/h. In the urban cycle, MG quotes more than 600km for the bigger battery.
Charging is decent for the class rather than record-breaking: up to 82–87kW on a DC rapid charger, with 10–80% taking around 28–30 minutes. The onboard AC charger is rated at 11kW. A heat pump and Vehicle-to-Load (powering external devices) are standard – kit that often costs extra on rivals.

Tech and equipment
The dashboard is built around a 12.8-inch central touchscreen and a 7-inch driver display, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The driver-assistance suite is impressively complete even on the base car: adaptive cruise, traffic jam assist, blind-spot detection, door-opening warning and driver monitoring. Euro NCAP awarded it five stars. Top trims add a 360-degree camera with ‘transparent chassis’ view, heated seats and steering wheel, and wireless phone charging.
Price and who it’s for
Official German prices (April 2026) are: 43kWh Active €24,990, 43kWh Comfort €27,190, 54kWh Comfort €28,490 and 54kWh Premium €31,490. In France (as a launch offer) and Austria, prices start from €19,990. That puts the MG4 Urban squarely against the newest affordable EVs, but with more space than most of them. If you need a practical family EV for town and beyond and price is the deciding factor, this is one of the strongest propositions on paper. If rapid-charging pace or driving dynamics top your list, pricier rivals have the edge.
