VW ID.7 Tourer: the estate car goes electric – and goes the distance

Nearly five metres long, up to 1,714 litres of boot and up to 689 km of WLTP range: the ID.7 Tourer is the electric heir to the Passat Variant ethos.

The estate car isn’t dead – it has simply switched fuels. The Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer is Wolfsburg’s answer to the question of what happens to the Passat Variant in the electric age: nearly five metres long, a boot built for a family fortnight away, and a WLTP range that on paper breaks the 680 km barrier. This is a car designed for the autobahn, not for Instagram.

Design and interior: slippery, but roomy

The ID.7 Tourer rides on the MEB platform and is built in Emden, Germany, alongside the ID.7 fastback and the ID.4. At 4,961 mm long with a 2,971 mm wheelbase, it is one of the biggest cars in VW’s electric line-up. Despite the estate shape, its drag coefficient is just 0.24 (0.23 for the GTX) – a number that explains much of its impressive range.

The boot is the headline: 605 litres with five on board and up to 1,714 litres with the rear seats folded. Inside, a 15-inch central touchscreen takes centre stage, an augmented-reality head-up display is standard, and the panoramic roof can be specified with smart glass that switches from clear to opaque at a touch. ergoActive seats bring massage and ventilation, while the IDA voice assistant now integrates ChatGPT.

Powertrains and range: three flavours

The line-up is refreshingly clear. The ID.7 Tourer Pro uses a 77 kWh net (82 kWh gross) battery and a 210 kW (286 PS) rear-mounted motor – good for up to 606 km WLTP and 0-100 km/h in 6.6 seconds. The Pro S keeps the same output but gets an 86 kWh net (91 kWh gross) pack and up to 689 km of range. Topping the range is the dual-motor GTX with 250 kW (340 PS), 0-100 km/h in 5.5 seconds and up to 584 km. All versions are limited to 180 km/h.

On DC charging, the Pro accepts up to 175 kW (10-80% in around 28 minutes), while the Pro S and GTX take up to 200 kW (around 26 minutes). In practice, a single coffee stop should cover a long motorway day.

Tech and practicality

Standard kit is generous: Travel Assist, Park Assist Plus with remote parking, a rear-view camera, automatic charging-stop route planning and pre-conditioning. Software is updated over the air. The battery is warranted for 8 years or 160,000 km (minimum 70% capacity). One weakness visible on the spec sheet: towball nose weight is just 75 kg – fine for a bike rack, but caravan owners should check towing capacity carefully.

Price and who it’s for

In Germany the ID.7 Tourer starts at €54,905 including VAT, according to Volkswagen. Earlier price lists quoted the Pro S from €59,785 and the GTX Tourer from €63,955. Against the Skoda Enyaq, Tesla Model Y or Hyundai Ioniq 6, the VW plays a card few rivals hold: a genuine estate with huge range. If you cover big miles, carry a family and can’t stand SUVs, this may be the most rational EV on sale right now.
