George Russell dominated Baku qualifying, while teammate and championship leader Kimi Antonelli crashed into the wall in Q1 and will start 16th.

George Russell reminded everyone why it’s tough being Mercedes’ number two – he took yet another pole in Baku, with a commanding 0.837-second advantage over Charles Leclerc. A lap journalists have already called “sensational,” and one Russell himself probably just calls a Monday.

Antonelli Went With a Different Approach: the Wall

While Russell was busy showing everyone how a perfect lap is done, championship leader Kimi Antonelli decided to demonstrate something rather different – a Turn 1 crash in Q1, a punctured tyre, and a wrecked session. His engineer Peter Bonnington was blunt over the radio: stop the car, because even if he made it back to the garage there wouldn’t be time to fix it.

The result is that the champion will start provisionally from 16th on the grid – quite a way from the “championship leader” status that usually comes with a front-row start, rather than a spot in the midfield with the usual suspects.

Hadjar Made His Comeback and Nearly Stole the Show

In the shadow of Antonelli’s drama, Isack Hadjar produced an impressive comeback after his wrist injury, qualifying fourth and coming close to a front-row-adjacent grid slot. Sadly, nobody was talking about him much, since the paddock was still busy discussing exactly how you crash a car at Turn 1 during a qualifying session.

The Front of the Grid

1. George Russell (Mercedes)
2. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)
3. Oscar Piastri (McLaren)
4. Isack Hadjar (Red Bull)

Three cars stayed within a second of Russell – which sounds impressive, until you remember he had 0.837 seconds on the man in second. The maths can be brutal for the other 19 drivers sometimes.
