Leclerc Wants an Upgrade Arms Race: ‘Whoever Brings Parts First Wins’

Charles Leclerc isn’t dressing up the diagnosis: in 2026 F1, the title doesn’t go to the fastest driver, but to whoever brings upgrades fastest. “It’s all about who brings the upgrades as early as possible,” the Monégasque said, with an unmistakable nudge aimed at his own team.
The trigger is specific — Red Bull rolled out an upgrade package in Azerbaijan, and Max Verstappen has since won two of the last three races in the recent triple-header, plus the Singapore Sprint. Ferrari, meanwhile, has managed just three podiums in its last eight races, and Leclerc’s Singapore runner-up finish was his first rostrum since Belgium. He says Ferrari has added small tweaks here and there, but admits the team has lost ground to Red Bull, Mercedes and even a struggling McLaren over the last three rounds.
The 2026 rules make swings like this possible in a way the old ground-effect generation never did, where major upgrades near the end of a cycle were rare. The standings underline just how tight things are: only 37 points separate second-placed Russell from sixth-placed Norris, with Leclerc sandwiched in fifth. Antonelli leads by 102 and could crown himself as early as Austin or Mexico City — while everyone else races for the order behind him, not the title itself.
