Mercedes C-Class Coupé & Cabriolet (2015-2023): second-hand style without the surprises

A used buyer’s guide to the C205/A205: engines from C 200 to C 63, what the 2018 facelift changed and what to check before you buy.

Some cars you buy with your head, others with your heart. The Mercedes C-Class Coupé and Cabriolet of the C205/A205 generation manage to be both: practical enough for daily use, pretty enough to make you look back in the car park. Built from 2015 to 2023, they now fill the used market in huge variety – from frugal diesels to the V8-powered C 63. Here’s what to know before you sign.

Two cars in one: before and after the facelift

The Coupé arrived in 2015, followed a year later by the soft-top Cabriolet. The major update came in March 2018, with a European market launch that July. Outside, the changes are in the details: a new ‘diamond’ grille, reworked bumpers, new standard LED headlights and optional MULTIBEAM LED units with 84 individually controlled LEDs per lamp and an ULTRA RANGE high beam.

Inside, the change is more obvious. The facelift brought an optional 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with three display styles, a 10.25-inch central screen, touch-control buttons on the steering wheel and 64-colour ambient lighting. Driver assistance borrowed from the S-Class – Active DISTRONIC with map data, Active Lane Change Assist and Active Emergency Stop Assist. If tech matters to you, look for a car built after mid-2018.

Engines: from C 200 to C 63 S

After the facelift the C 200 switched to a 1.5-litre turbo petrol with 48-volt EQ Boost: 135 kW (184 PS) and 280 Nm, plus up to 10 kW of temporary assistance from the starter-generator. The Coupé hits 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds. The C 220 d with the new 2.0-litre diesel delivers 143 kW (194 PS) and 400 Nm, does 0-100 km/h in 7.0 seconds and averages 4.6-4.9 l/100 km – probably the smartest choice for high-mileage drivers.

The Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC is the sweet spot: a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 with 287 kW (390 PS) and 520 Nm post-facelift, all-wheel drive with a 31:69 rear-biased split and 0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds for the Coupé. At the top sits the C 63 with a hand-built 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 and rear-wheel drive – 469 hp for the C 63 and 503 hp for the C 63 S according to Mercedes’ US data. With the facelift it gained the nine-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT gearbox with a wet start-off clutch.

What to check when buying

The golden rule applies in full: a complete, verifiable service history matters more than the mileage. Ask for records of automatic gearbox servicing and check with an authorised dealer that all recall campaigns and software updates have been carried out. A diagnostic scan with official equipment can reveal hidden fault codes, especially in the more complex electronics and the 48-volt system of the C 200 EQ Boost.

On a Cabriolet, open and close the roof several times, inspect the seals and look for signs of damp in the cabin and boot. With diesels, ask how the car was used – endless short town trips are not ideal for the particulate filter. On AMG models, check tyres, brakes and wheels carefully and be wary of non-original ‘tuning’ modifications. Finally, make sure promised equipment such as the digital cluster or MULTIBEAM headlights is actually fitted.

Who it’s for

The C 220 d suits those who want style and low running costs. The C 200 EQ Boost is the sensible petrol compromise. The C 43 is for drivers who want AMG emotion with year-round 4MATIC security, while the C 63 is for collectors and enthusiasts ready to fund V8 upkeep.
