While the entire Zandvoort paddock spent Thursday before the Dutch Grand Prix talking about nothing but the new contracts in the garages – above all Max Verstappen’s long-term commitment through 2030 – George Russell brought a very different piece of news from his summer. The Mercedes driver announced that he’s engaged to his longtime partner, Carmen Montero Mundt.

At the press conference, the Briton accepted congratulations with visible calm, in no hurry at all to talk about his own future at the team. His current contract with Mercedes, signed in 2021, runs through the end of 2026, and the team has not yet announced an early extension.

According to Russell himself, exactly this kind of personal stability is an important anchor in the long, exhausting fight for the title over a season. In a sport where clauses, fees and transfer rumours usually dominate the headlines every week, he chose to put something entirely different from the paddock’s usual transfer circus front and centre.
