George Russell began the 2026 season as Mercedes’ established leader and title favourite, but after 14 races the picture looks radically different — his teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli has decisively overtaken him, winning eight races to the Briton’s two and building a solid 81-point lead in the standings, 292 to 211.

Analysts agree, however, that Russell’s problem is not a drop in his own level — he remains competitive and still holds second place in the championship. Rather, Antonelli has proven exceptionally effective at converting opportunities into wins, meaning the challenge facing Russell stems from an extremely high bar being set, not from any personal regression.

The gap between the two was especially clear over the Madrid weekend, where Russell started strong but saw his advantage fade as qualifying and the race progressed. He qualified sixth, while Antonelli secured a front-row start and went on to win the race, with Russell finishing fifth.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff acknowledged the psychological weight of the situation, saying Russell is “taking blows” but expressing confidence that “great ones bounce back”. Wolff defended his driver’s class but admitted the team needs to work out exactly what is needed to unlock his true potential.

It’s worth stressing that the team hierarchy has shifted naturally — through superior on-track performance, not through explicit team orders or a strategic decision. The question hanging over the rest of the season is whether Russell can reverse the trend before his status as Mercedes’ number one driver becomes an irreversible fact.
