Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri remain free to race each other, but McLaren has drawn a clear line: their Singapore collision must not be repeated. Norris revealed the message ahead of the United States Grand Prix in Austin.
The team mates made contact on the final lap of the Marina Bay Sprint. Although the stewards classified it as a racing incident, Norris accepted responsibility. In Texas, he acknowledged receiving stern words and said the internal discussions had left no room for misunderstanding.
There is no ban on racing each other. The drivers must, however, avoid contact whenever possible. The subject carries extra weight at Austin, where they also collided at the first corner of last year’s Sprint.
McLaren’s concerns extend beyond its drivers’ battles. Norris offered a blunt assessment of the car itself, arguing that it is too difficult to drive at the limit to provide a dependable foundation for a championship campaign.
He stressed that his summer successes had not come through comfortable superiority. Putting together a quick qualifying lap required precision, while narrow margins left almost no room for mistakes.
Norris still believes another victory is possible this season. For next year, however, he wants a more predictable car. Austin consequently poses two questions for McLaren: can it find more speed, and can its drivers turn that performance into a combined result? With a car already demanding so much, battles that end in contact only make the task harder.
