George Russell has opened up about the disappointment of his 2026 campaign after Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli secured the world championship in Mexico. In an emotional social media message, the Briton acknowledged that this was the first season of his career in which the bad days had outnumbered the good ones.

A challenge that lost momentum

Russell began the year by winning the Australian Grand Prix and added victories in Austria and Azerbaijan. Those successes were not enough to sustain a title challenge against Antonelli, whose consistent results gradually put the championship beyond reach.

Reflecting on the season, Russell pointed to both misfortune and poor performances. He described the difficulty of picking himself up repeatedly and admitted that confusion had also been part of the experience. His conclusion was direct: “2026 was not meant to be my year.”

Mexico brought another setback

Russell started second at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, but an electrical energy deployment issue on the opening straight cost him several positions. Contact with Isack Hadjar then brought a 10-second penalty, leaving him sixth on the day his team-mate became champion.

Toto Wolff accepted responsibility for the technical problem, explaining that Mercedes had let Russell down. The team principal believed his driver had the pace to fight for victory before the opening-lap issue compromised his race.

Sportsmanship in a painful moment

Despite his disappointment, Russell congratulated Antonelli after the finish and repeated in his public message that the Italian thoroughly deserved the title. Wolff praised that gesture and acknowledged how difficult the situation was for his more experienced driver.

Reuters reported that Mercedes excused Russell from his post-race media duties. The FIA fined the team €5,000 for the missed commitments. Wolff said he understood the emotional strain behind Russell’s departure from the circuit.

A promise to recover

Russell also thanked the people responsible for Mercedes’ car and power unit, recognising the collective effort behind the team’s return to the front. He promised to give everything over the remaining four races and into next season as he seeks to rediscover his strongest form.

There is still a shared objective before attention shifts fully to 2027: helping Mercedes complete its campaign by securing the Constructors’ Championship.
