Kimi Antonelli arrives in Austin with a chance to become the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history. The Mercedes driver, however, is determined not to let his first title opportunity dictate his weekend.
The Italian has 340 points and leads George Russell by 102. To settle the championship on Sunday, he must win, with his team mate ninth or lower and Lewis Hamilton outside the top four. Victory alone will not be enough.
Speaking on Thursday, Antonelli acknowledged that he needs an almost perfect race while his rivals struggle. He and race engineer Peter Bonnington have therefore chosen the approach that has served them throughout the season: enjoy the racing and take one event at a time.
His progress since his rookie campaign is striking. After 17 Grands Prix, Antonelli has eight victories and six other podium finishes. He explained that he no longer tries to force every lap or result, and now understands both the car and the people around him better.
Hamilton also backed his Mercedes successor. The seven-time champion began by joking that Antonelli should slow down, before praising his composure, talent and conduct throughout the season.
Austin offers Antonelli his first chance to turn a childhood ambition into reality. His message remains clear: the job must be finished first. With such a commanding lead, celebrating too early would be an easy temptation — and one the Italian is working to resist.
In Texas, he will chase victory while his rivals try to keep the championship alive.
