20 Years On: Schumacher’s Last Win Came in Shanghai, and Nobody Saw It Coming

While the paddock packs up for Sepang, formula1.com found a moment to remind everyone of something properly sobering: twenty years ago, on 25 September 2006, Michael Schumacher scored his 91st and final Grand Prix victory in Shanghai. Nobody treated it as a farewell at the time — just another wet afternoon in which the seven-time champion beat Fernando Alonso and pulled level with him on points in a title fight he would ultimately lose that season.

The numbers still look faintly absurd two decades on: 68 pole positions, 155 podiums, well over 1,500 championship points and more than 300 race starts, a résumé that makes most of today’s grid look like they’re still doing their homework. His brother Ralf, who spent plenty of his own career racing alongside him, called Michael his idol — no big revelations, just the kind of sibling pride that comes wrapped in the Schumacher family’s usual understatement.

Two decades later, with F1 about to return to Sepang after an eight-year gap, the timing of the reminder feels apt: however dramatic this season gets, few will ever write a chapter quite like his.
