Volkswagen is finally doing what many expected: taking its strongest name and putting it on an electric car. The new ID. Tiguan makes its world premiere in early October 2026, reaches markets at the start of 2027 and replaces both the ID.4 and ID.5. The stakes could hardly be higher – the Tiguan is the best-selling model not just for the VW brand, but for the entire Volkswagen Group.
Why the name matters
The numbers speak for themselves. According to Volkswagen, more than 8.3 million Tiguans have been built, and last year alone deliveries of the Tiguan and its sister model, the Tayron, topped one million. The ID.4 and ID.5 were hardly flops either, with more than 950,000 delivered since 2021, making them among the Group’s most successful EV lines. But an alphanumeric badge never built the emotional pull of a real name.
So the ID. Tiguan continues the strategy that started with the ID. Polo and ID. Cross: a familiar name, a clearly defined car. Crucially, the combustion Tiguan – with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid power – stays on sale. The two will be sold side by side, so buyers choose a powertrain rather than a different model.

What we know – and what we don’t
Officially, Volkswagen promises a ‘completely new design’ that gives the ID. Tiguan the visual presence of a car from the next segment up, along with ‘premium design, generous space, intuitive operation and innovative technologies’, in the words of brand CEO Thomas Schäfer. For now it is still testing under camouflage wrap, and the official images show exactly that – a near-production concept car, not yet on sale.
Technical data – batteries, outputs, range, charging speeds, dimensions and prices – has not been announced. The brand’s latest EVs give a clue: the ID. Cross, revealed in July 2026, uses the updated MEB+ platform, pairs a 10.25-inch digital cockpit with a 12.9-inch central screen in a horizontal layout and brings back more physical controls. Whether the ID. Tiguan shares that hardware, VW hasn’t said – the premiere will tell.

Rivals and who it’s for
As the ID.4’s successor, the newcomer steps into Europe’s most fiercely contested EV segment: the compact SUV. Waiting there are in-house siblings such as the Skoda Elroq and Enyaq, plus the Tesla Model Y, Kia EV5, Renault Scenic and many more. VW’s trump card is the name itself: for millions of Tiguan owners, switching to electric could feel like a natural next step rather than a leap into the unknown.
If you’re weighing up an ID.4 right now, it makes sense to wait a few weeks – the premiere will show whether the new generation brings meaningful gains in range and charging. We’ll bring you the full details as soon as Volkswagen releases them.
