Sepang Is Back: F1’s Wildest Moments Ahead of the Malaysian GP’s Return

Formula 1 is heading back to Sepang this weekend, nearly a decade after the Malaysian circuit last hosted a grand prix. The track has plenty of stories to tell, most of them involving rain, chaos, and at least one juicy scandal.
It all started in 1999, when Michael Schumacher returned from injury, obliterated qualifying by over a second, then happily played chauffeur so teammate Eddie Irvine could take the win — before both Ferraris were disqualified over illegal bargeboards and later reinstated on appeal. In 2003, Kimi Raikkonen started seventh and won his maiden race purely on strategy, beating Fernando Alonso’s Renault by 40 seconds. Then came 2009, when a biblical storm halted the race at lap 33 and handed Jenson Button half points — the first time that had happened since 1991. In 2012, Sergio Perez nearly stole victory from Alonso for Sauber, only to clip a kerb in the closing laps. A year later, Sebastian Vettel made “Multi 21” a household phrase by ignoring team orders to pass Mark Webber, souring their relationship for good.
And then there’s 2016, when Lewis Hamilton’s engine detonated while he was leading, torching his title hopes in the process. Sepang now gets another shot at writing its next unhinged chapter.
