Gabriel Bortoleto, Franco Colapinto and Arvid Lindblad have received grid penalties for the United States Grand Prix after exceeding their permitted seasonal allocations of power-unit components. The decisions add a strategic complication for Audi, Alpine and Racing Bulls before qualifying has even taken place in Austin.

Bortoleto has the largest penalty. The Brazilian receives a combined 20-place drop after taking a fourth energy store and a fourth control electronics unit. Penalties exceeding 15 places require a driver to start at the back of the grid. Audi has also changed other components, but those remain within the permitted allocation and do not add to his sanction.

Colapinto receives a 10-place drop for a fourth control electronics unit. Lindblad loses five places after taking his sixth internal combustion engine against an allowance of four. The Racing Bulls driver had already exceeded the allocation for that component, accounting for the different size of his penalty.

These are technical sanctions rather than penalties for driving conduct. The first use of an additional component beyond its allocation carries a 10-place drop, with subsequent breaches for that element attracting five places. Separate penalties incurred at the same event are cumulative.

The practical implications differ for the three drivers. A strong qualifying performance can still matter for Colapinto and Lindblad, although their results will be adjusted. Bortoleto’s preparation naturally takes on a greater focus on racing from the rear. The final starting order will also depend on the other drivers’ qualifying results and any further penalties.

Strategically, starting further back increases the importance of the opening lap, tyre management and pit-stop timing. The sanctions do not determine the finishing order, but they leave less room for mistakes. All three young drivers now face the additional challenge of recovering positions lost before the lights go out.
