Mercedes gained extra downforce from its latest upgrade, but the new specification made the car harder to drive. Motorsport.com reports that the change delivered some of the expected aerodynamic benefit while also altering the car’s behaviour. The team must now work out how to use the package’s potential without reducing driver confidence.

In Formula 1, more downforce does not automatically mean better pace in every situation. If a car becomes more sensitive to set-up or less predictable for the drivers, they may not be able to use its potential across a full lap. Engineers are therefore analysing the Singapore data and looking for a balance between aerodynamic grip, stability and feel.

The next weekend in Austin will provide a useful comparison. Circuit of The Americas combines fast corners, sharp changes of direction and slower sections, placing different demands on the car. The results should show whether the difficulties were specific to Singapore or reflect a broader compromise in Mercedes’s new specification. The team will also review driver feedback before confirming its direction for the next round.
