Hamilton: Monaco Sprint? ‘Makes No Sense to Me,’ But No One Asked

Formula 1 has decided that Monaco – the one circuit on the calendar where overtaking is more legend than reality – needs a sprint. From 2027, the Monaco Grand Prix will be part of a record ten sprint weekends for the season, and Lewis Hamilton makes no secret of disliking the idea.

“It doesn’t make sense to me, but I’m clearly not the one making the decisions,” said the seven-time champion and three-time Monaco winner. In his view, the problem isn’t a lack of formats but the circuit itself – Monaco “needs something different,” not “the same race format as everywhere else.”

Hamilton is just as blunt about the sprint format itself: “The race is boring as hell… a sprint isn’t the answer, I’d say.” The FIA’s logic is to provide two qualifying sessions – sprint qualifying would run just an hour after the only practice session, in the hope of mixed-up grids for both races while preserving the drama of Monaco’s famous qualifying hour.

The underlying problem is a familiar one – the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix ended under a red flag because of a crumbling track surface, but still remained largely processional, despite the experimental mandatory double pit stop introduced in previous years specifically to force overtakes the circuit refuses to produce on its own.
