Alexander Dunne turned Baku into his best weekend of the season. The Rodin Motorsport driver took pole, claimed his first win of the year and finished on the podium in all three races to haul himself back into Formula 2 title contention.
A win, a podium and a costly penalty
The Irishman won Feature Race 1 by 4.3 seconds after a podium in the Sprint Race. He also took the chequered flag first in Feature Race 2, but a five-second penalty for crossing the white line at pit entry dropped him to third and handed victory to Rafael Câmara.
Without that penalty Dunne would have been just one point off the lead. Instead he sits 18 behind Câmara and 11 behind second-placed Nikola Tsolov.
Sixty points to 18 in two rounds
Dunne arrived in Baku 38 points down, and only two weekends ago the gap had stood at 60. He admitted he could hardly believe how quickly it had shrunk.
“We’re definitely in the fight,” Dunne told the official F2 website. He praised a car he said was strong in every condition and explained that he is simply taking things one round at a time.
