Fernando Alonso has signed on with Aston Martin through 2027, and Lance Stroll is staying for a ninth season. The team has 3 points after 15 rounds – all of them Alonso’s.

Fernando Alonso has done something few 45-year-olds would volunteer for – he signed up for another season of suffering. The Spaniard has extended his contract with Aston Martin through 2027, putting an end to months of speculation over whether there was any point in still showing up for work.

Of course there’s a point. Racing is his life, his passion, remember? That’s exactly what Alonso himself said: “I’m very happy to sign a new contract with Aston Martin. Racing is my life, my passion.” A passion currently measured in 3 points after 15 rounds – all of them earned personally by him, since his teammate Lance Stroll is apparently saving his points for a more special occasion.

Stroll Jr. Stays for a Ninth Season – Because Stroll Sr.’s Money Never Runs Out

Yes, while you’re reading this, Lance Stroll also signed – for his ninth season at the team owned by his father, Lawrence Stroll. A coincidence, obviously. Billionaires love investing in projects that produce results, not just projects that produce family surnames on the side of a car.

Lawrence Stroll himself assured fans that everything is under control: “I believe we have the resources and the people to become a winning team.” Resources – check. People – check. Results – working on it, somewhere between 2023 and eternity.

Tenth Place Has Never Looked So Stable

Aston Martin currently sits tenth in the constructors’ standings, ahead only of rookie outfit Cadillac, who have exactly zero points. Which means Alonso is, quite literally, racing for the honour of not finishing last – a mission he’s just signed a new contract for, fully aware of what awaits.

The team has explained its difficult season with issues around the 2026 regulations and Honda’s engine competitiveness – the classic excuse used by every team that doesn’t want to just say “the car isn’t good enough.”

Alonso joined Aston Martin in 2023 from Alpine with six podiums in his first eight races and promises of a great future. Three years on, the future looks a lot like the present – just with a fresh signature under it.
