Months of speculation are over: Fernando Alonso is staying at Aston Martin through 2027, with Lance Stroll keeping his seat alongside him — the line-up stays put despite a season that gave the team precious little to celebrate. Trackside chief Mike Krack isn’t hiding his relief: “The fact that both drivers continue with us shows their trust and commitment in the team and its possibilities… the signature gives a good sign, a strong signal to everybody.”

Krack doesn’t dodge the hard parts either: “We went through really tough times, especially at the beginning of the project, where we could almost not drive.” On Alonso specifically, he’s blunt about why the Spaniard needed time to think it over — when someone has that kind of track record, you respect the request. And Krack doesn’t pretend Alonso is thrilled with the current rules: “It’s not a secret that he’s not so happy with the regulations. He wanted to see how that goes.”

Alonso himself points to a “fire inside” as his real motivation, with some of that enthusiasm fuelled by F1’s coming V6-to-electric power split shifting to 60:40 — apparently enough to convince the 39-year-old the sport’s future is worth sticking around for.
