Esteban Ocon will not return to a Haas race seat during the remainder of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The team has confirmed that Rafael Camara will partner Oliver Bearman at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix on November 6–8.
For the 21-year-old Brazilian, it will be a Formula 1 debut in front of his home crowd. The Formula 2 championship leader had already been announced as a Haas driver for 2027, but now receives an earlier opportunity.
Mexico replacement becomes a season-ending exit
Ocon was removed from the line-up during the Mexico City weekend. Reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa stepped in and earned a point on his Grand Prix debut after penalties for other drivers promoted him to tenth place.
Hirakawa has existing World Endurance Championship commitments with Toyota over the coming weekend, opening the door for Camara to race in Brazil.
Haas keeps the discussions private
Team principal Ayao Komatsu said Ocon had been informed that he would not return this season. He described the decision as being in the team’s best interests but declined to disclose the contents of their internal discussions.
Ocon has acknowledged a difference of views and a subsequent conversation while categorically denying reports of physical violence. Those allegations have not been confirmed by Haas and should not be treated as an established explanation for his removal.
Camara has already impressed the team
The Brazilian’s previous experience with Haas includes an August test in an older car at Portimao. Komatsu pointed to that outing as evidence of his ability and a reason for confidence before the debut.
A home Grand Prix will nevertheless bring a new challenge. Camara must adapt to a full Formula 1 race weekend, work with the team under competitive conditions and handle the attention surrounding his first start.
An early step towards 2027
Haas has confirmed Camara for Sao Paulo, while the decision concerning Ocon applies to the remainder of the season. The announcement should therefore not be read as a detailed confirmation of Camara’s programme for every remaining round.
For the team, the Brazilian weekend offers an opportunity to begin working with its future race driver earlier than planned. For Camara, the test experience is a useful starting point, but his first Grand Prix will provide a very different measure of what lies ahead.
