Could Rafael Camara make his F1 debut at home? Ocon’s Haas exit opens a door in São Paulo

Haas has pulled Esteban Ocon from the rest of the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend. That has sparked speculation about who will drive the second Haas at Interlagos, where Rafael Camara could be handed an early taste of Formula 1 in front of his home crowd. This is an unconfirmed rumour. Neither Haas nor Camara has said anything about it.
What has happened
Haas announced on Saturday morning that reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa would replace Ocon for the remainder of the Mexican weekend. The team said the change was not due to illness. Haas has given no reason for the swap.
Why Brazil is now in focus
The change concerns only the Mexican Grand Prix, so Ocon’s status for the next round, the São Paulo Grand Prix on November 8, is unresolved. Haas has not said whether Hirakawa will stay in the seat beyond Mexico, and four rounds remain after Mexico. With Ocon already on his way out, that leaves the seat open for Haas to fill however it chooses.
The Camara factor
The 21-year-old Ferrari Academy driver signed a multi-year deal with Haas and will replace Ocon next season. He is from Recife and would join Gabriel Bortoleto as the second Brazilian on the grid. Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu said Camara handled himself well when he drove the team’s previous-year car in testing in Portugal. A home debut at Interlagos would be a big moment for Brazilian fans, but it is only speculation at this stage.
A recent precedent
Camara would not be the first young driver to get an early opportunity like this. Last year, Red Bull junior Arvid Lindblad appeared in FP1 at the 2025 Mexico City Grand Prix in place of Max Verstappen and finished sixth in the session. On December 2, 2025, he was announced as Liam Lawson’s team-mate at Racing Bulls for 2026. The situations are not identical, since Lindblad’s outing was a practice session and not a race, but it shows how teams can use an early run to prepare a young driver for a full-time seat.
The counterarguments
Hirakawa is already in the car and making his race debut, so Haas could simply keep him for the rest of the season. Camara is also fighting for the Formula 2 title, which could limit his availability. Neither side has commented.
What next
The paddock will be watching Haas’s announcements ahead of São Paulo. If anything is confirmed, it will most likely come before the Interlagos weekend.
