A poor start and a strategy that fell short

Max Verstappen finished third in the United States Grand Prix, but a podium did little to disguise his frustration with Red Bull’s performance. After victories in Malaysia and Singapore, the Dutchman arrived in Austin with an opportunity for another strong result. Instead, a poor start, power-unit problems and an unconvincing tyre choice complicated his afternoon.

Verstappen started second but lost a position to Charles Leclerc at the beginning of the race. He subsequently moved back ahead of the Ferrari, while Red Bull committed to an aggressive two-stop strategy. The plan failed to deliver the expected advantage, leaving Max to defend second place in the final stint rather than attack Kimi Antonelli.

Tyres and power-unit consistency

After the finish, Verstappen questioned both the chosen compounds and the order in which they were used. He noted that the harder tyres had suddenly worked well despite proving less competitive for the team in previous races. A slow pit stop made his task more difficult.

The driver also highlighted inconsistent power-unit behaviour as a major problem. Verstappen explained that the changing response made it harder to manage the car’s balance through corners. Leclerc eventually passed him, while the late Virtual Safety Car limited Hamilton’s opportunity to challenge for the final podium place.

Hadjar shares the frustration

Isack Hadjar was equally disappointed. The Frenchman started third but dropped back after a problem at the launch. Following a strong opening stint, he then became stuck in an incorrect engine mode after his pit stop, affecting throttle response. Hadjar finished sixth, between the two McLarens.

Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies added that Verstappen’s car had picked up damage from debris around lap eight. In his assessment, the team had failed to exploit the car’s full potential. Third and sixth brought valuable points, but left specific problems to address before Mexico.
