Kimi Antonelli ended Friday in Austin just 0.042 seconds behind Charles Leclerc, giving Mercedes reason for optimism ahead of qualifying for the United States Grand Prix. After finishing fifth in FP1, the Italian moved up to second in the afternoon session with a lap of 1:35.333.
The improvement matters beyond the timesheets. Mercedes is still working to extract the best from the upgrade package introduced in Malaysia. Those changes did not immediately deliver the expected step forward, and George Russell returned to the older specification in Singapore. Both drivers are running the same version of the car again in Austin.
Antonelli explained that the balance had made the first session difficult, but adjustments between the two practices helped. He believes Mercedes is developing a better understanding of the package. The next challenge is to make that performance repeatable, rather than finding the right operating window only intermittently.
The weekend brings additional attention because Antonelli has a mathematical opportunity to secure the Drivers’ Championship in the United States. Mercedes is not building its approach around that possibility, however. Deputy Team Principal Bradley Lord described the prospect of an early title resolution as remote and stressed the importance of a strong result for the team as a whole.
Lord expects a close contest between the four leading teams, including over longer runs. That puts a premium on small gains: a few hundredths could separate a front-row start from a much less comfortable position.
Friday’s progress places Antonelli among the contenders at the front, but does not settle the battle. Qualifying will provide a clearer indication of whether Mercedes can turn its improved understanding of the upgrades into a result when every team draws on its full performance potential.
