Soaked and In Love: Malaysia’s PM Wants F1 Back at Sepang for Good

While Max Verstappen celebrated in the Sepang rain, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had his own moment of triumph — soaked to match. “I’m wet, drenched, but excited. You see, the entire country is rejoicing,” he said, after the Malaysian Grand Prix stepped in for Bahrain amid regional conflict and delivered the circuit’s first race since 2017.

Now Ibrahim wants more than a one-off substitution: “I’m looking forward to discussing” a permanent return to the calendar. According to RacingNews365 sources, Sepang hopes to replace the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix outright or pick up another displaced Bahrain date, with eyes on a permanent slot from 2028.

The weekend itself wasn’t exactly a flawless audition, though — heavy traffic congestion, water leaks, track surface issues and delayed spectator evacuations all made the list of complaints. A gentle reminder that Sepang nostalgia is a lot easier on a Sunday morning than the logistics of actually rebuilding it.
