Sepang delivers a double blow for Russell: retirement and Singapore penalty

George Russell lost a strong result at Sepang when a power unit problem ended his race in the closing stages. The Mercedes driver was running third behind the Safety Car before pulling over and retiring.
The consequences now extend into the next weekend. On October 7, Motorsport.com reported that Mercedes had confirmed a power unit penalty for Singapore. Toto Wolff said Russell would have to start from the back of the grid on Sunday.
The Briton will therefore keep paying for the failure after leaving Malaysia. Recovering positions at a street circuit such as Marina Bay presents an additional challenge.
For Mercedes, the episode brings reliability back into focus. The team must understand the failure while giving Russell a chance to limit the damage at the next race. A promising Sepang finish has become a problem stretching across two consecutive weekends.
