The end of October could bring the next major step in Nikola Tsolov’s career. After a positive test with Racing Bulls at Imola, Mexico is emerging as a possible setting for his first appearance in an official Formula 1 weekend. But the significance of the session could extend well beyond the debut itself.

Tsolov has already taken the first step. At Imola, the Campos driver completed around 700 kilometres in a Racing Bulls car, working through long runs, tyre management and team procedures. Alan Permane praised how quickly he adapted and the composure he showed behind the wheel.

It was a significant step. But it leaves open the question that could carry the greatest weight for his future: how will Tsolov perform in the current car?

The car he drove at Imola belonged to the previous technical generation. The 2026 regulations changed both aerodynamics and power units, as well as energy management. His strong test is encouraging, but it cannot provide a full assessment of how he would adapt to today’s Formula 1. An FP1 outing would offer precisely that missing comparison.

A session with implications for the driver market?

According to unconfirmed information available to PitLane24, Red Bull wants to see Tsolov in the current car before finalising decisions about the futures of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad.

That would give a possible Mexico appearance a different significance. Tsolov’s task would not simply be to rack up mileage, but to show pace, consistency and clear feedback to the engineers — the qualities a team uses to judge whether a young driver is ready for the next level.

There is also a public basis for that reading. In July, Permane described Tsolov as the next candidate to move up to Racing Bulls, with the 2027 line-up still unannounced at the time. That does not prove a connection between his FP1 and talks with the race drivers, but it places the possible session in a broader context.

What is happening behind the scenes

Information reaching PitLane24 from people close to the programme suggests that Tsolov is already spending time on the simulator in Milton Keynes, learning the circuits rather than only studying them on video.

As the plan has been shared with us, he could be at the track with the team as early as Austin — not simply arriving to get in the car on Friday, but beginning to learn how a race weekend is organised and watching the engineers work in real time before taking the wheel himself.

None of this has been officially confirmed by the team. Plans of this kind at Red Bull can be reshuffled as late as Thursday evening, so we are reporting this conditionally, not as a certainty.

Why are eyes on Mexico?

The first practice session in Mexico is scheduled for Friday, 30 October. Tsolov could therefore make his first appearance in an official Formula 1 weekend before the end of the month.

The circuit presents a distinctive test. At around 2,250 metres above sea level, the thinner air reduces aerodynamic downforce and drag while making cooling more difficult. That changes how the cars behave compared with most other circuits.

There is no reason to assume these conditions would make a debut easier, or that they are the specific reason for a possible selection. The stronger argument is that Red Bull has already used Mexico for important steps in preparing its young drivers.

Following Hadjar’s footsteps

The closest historical parallel is Isack Hadjar. In 2023, he made his first FP1 appearance in Mexico, replacing Yuki Tsunoda at AlphaTauri while still competing in Formula 2.

Lawson took a different route: his first practice session came with AlphaTauri at Spa in August 2022. Lindblad made his Red Bull debut at Silverstone in July 2025 and later took part in FP1 in Mexico that same year. The Mexican circuit therefore also featured in his preparation, although it was not the stage for his debut.

If Tsolov gets his first opportunity on 30 October, the similarity to Hadjar will be obvious. Whether Red Bull sees a deeper parallel between the two remains a question without a public answer for now.

Official confirmation is still awaited. But if the outline plan goes ahead, Tsolov’s first FP1 could be both a debut and an audition for something much bigger.

And then the most interesting thing in Mexico will not just be his lap time. It will be what Red Bull decides afterwards.
