How Verstappen Won Singapore With White Noise Instead of Team Radio

Max Verstappen has finally crossed Singapore off his list — a first win at Marina Bay, leaving Madring as the only circuit still missing from his collection. But behind what looked like a serene, controlled drive sat a far messier communication breakdown than anyone watching could tell.

The radio fault that first showed up in the weekend’s single practice session came back during the race itself. Rather than relying on anything resembling normal dialogue, Verstappen and race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase were reduced to improvising — the Dutchman keying his radio open to broadcast white noise, or simply staying silent to signal his strategy preference. Not exactly a textbook approach to Formula 1 communication, but apparently effective enough to get the job done.

Jenson Button called the drive a “masterclass” afterwards, and Verstappen himself sounded satisfied with how Red Bull worked around the glitch: “It has taken a while [to win here], but I think this race was very good… We had pace when we needed to have it on the soft tyre and on the medium.” The win continues Red Bull’s return to form since Bahrain — though the four-time champion might now be more worried about his own radio set than about the rest of the grid.
